Elli spackova : piano
with guest speaker louise davies (the vegan society)

This event is part of ClimateKeys, a glocal initiative launching with over thirty concerts in nine countries during October & November 2017 to raise public engagement with CoP23, the 2017 UN climate talks taking place in November. ClimateKeys, founded by London-based composer pianist Lola Perrin, features concert pianists and climate change experts collaborating in performances that include a conversation with the audience about positive response to climate change. To date, over a hundred concert musicians and guest speakers in twenty countries have joined ClimateKeys. More concerts are being planned through 2018.

Climate change is the biggest threat to our planet, and we can do something about it simply by changing what we eat. The Vegan Society are asking people to take our seven-day vegan challenge and to start to think differently about the food we eat. You can sign up at vegansociety.com/plateup.

Having worked in the field of sustainability for fifteen years, initially in sustainable events, then in fair trade and most recently in green politics, I have seen the conversation around climate change move up and down the public and policy agenda, with priorities shifting from light bulbs to tidal lagoons. Now is the time to talk about food. I believe that veganism presents us with a viable and positive opportunity for us to make a difference on a personal level. Going vegan can reduce your food related carbon emissions by up to 50%. There are now over 500,000 vegans in the UK, and it’s never been easier to cut meat and dairy from your diet.” (Louise Davies)

"I'm performing in Climate Keys as I feel that there is nothing more important to any of us than our planet, and I am very excited to be part of a project that combines music, which reflects nature in all its forms, and gives us a reason to want to save our planet, with the revolution we all need to make this happen! All proceeds from my concert will go to the environmental department of The Vegan Society to raise awareness for the biggest individual, but the least discussed cause of climate change- the meat / dairy industry. As the UN have stated in their 2010 report: A global shift towards a vegan diet is vital to save the world from hunger, fuel poverty and the worst impacts of climate change. We all have to take as much responsibility as we can for all that affects our planet, and to understand that we have to work with nature, as well as the rest of the 8.7 billion species that we share the world with, not against it! It is great to have this opportunity to raise awareness from so many angles, and to show that we should never underestimate the power we each have to make a difference, by making informed choices, and to do the very best we can to keep inspiring change! ELLI SPACKOVA was born in London but spent her early childhood in the Czech Republic, where she began the piano at the age of three. She studied in London at the Royal Academy of Music with Frank Wibaut and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Joan Havill. After graduating she continued her studies in Paris with the world renowned Madame Yvonne Loriod-Messiaen, with whom she studied contemporary music extensively as well as traditional repertoire. She has given many solo and chamber performances in London and around Britain, as well as in France, Germany and the Czech Republic, and was a prizewinner at the Karic International Piano Competition. She has also given concerts arranged by the Concordia Foundation at St Martin-in-the-Fields and St. James' Piccadilly, and the Liszt Society, and in festivals and masterclasses both in Britain and abroad, including the Brighton and Regent Hall festivals, the "Radolfzell Sommerakademie" in Germany with Professor Klaus Schilde and the Alberto Portugheis Steinway Hall International Summer Masterclasses. Since returning from Paris she performs as a soloist and a chamber musician.

LOUISE DAVIES has been involved in the broad sector of sustainability since setting up an events agency in 2005 which considered the social and environmental impact of live events. At Seventeen Events, she helped to raise the profile of sustainable events in the run up to the 2012 Olympics, and organised events for various media, charities and local government organisations, including setting up the Observer Ethical Awards. She moved to Wales in 2012 and changed her focus towards social justice, and fair trade in particular by setting up a fair trade shop (www.eighteenrabbit.co.uk). She also worked part time for the Green Party, developing their presence in Wales. She is now working for the Vegan Society, raising public awareness of the benefits of veganism, and influencing opinion formers and politicians to encourage vegan friendly policy changes.
